ATTENTION
All students of UIU

This is for information of all concerned that the 254th meeting of the Academic and Admin Committee held on December 08 and 09, 2024 decided to reintroduce academic probation for all the students of UIU (effective from Spring 2025 Trimester/Semester) as placed below:

UIU Probation Policy 2025

With a view to complement several other efforts of UIU for maintaining a high academic standard and to provide necessary support to its students in their academic pursuit, the United International University has decided to enforce the UIU Probation Policy 2025 as placed below:

i. For the students of both undergraduate and graduate programs, the minimum CGPA requirement for acceptable academic standing will be 2.0, which is also the minimum requirement (final CGPA of 2.0) for obtaining a degree from UIU. If a student’s CGPA falls below 2.0 at any time, he/she will be placed on ‘Academic Probation’.

For the Department of Pharmacy, however, the minimum CGPA requirement for acceptable academic standing will be 2.5, which is also the minimum requirement (final CGPA of 2.5) for obtaining B. Pharm. degree from UIU. If a Pharmacy student’s CGPA falls below 2.5 at any time, he/she will be placed on ‘Academic Probation’.

ii. Undergraduate students, who have completed less than 60 credits, will be served with maximum three probation notices in consecutive trimesters/semesters (once in a trimester/semester) to come out of the state of probation. If such students fail to raise their CGPA to the level of 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy) within the given time period, they will be dismissed from the respective Program. However, if a student achieves a term GPA of 2.0 or more (2.5 or more for the Department of Pharmacy) in any of the probation-trimesters/semesters (1st, 2nd or 3rd) without achieving CGPA of 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy), s/he will be allowed to continue his/her probation as long as s/he maintains a term GPA of 2.0 or more (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy). During this extended period of probation, if his/her term GPA falls below 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy) at any point of time, s/he will be dismissed from the Program.

iii. Undergraduate students, who have completed 60 credits or more, will also be served with three probation notices in consecutive trimesters/semesters (once in a trimester/semester) to come out of the state of probation. If such students fail to raise their CGPA to the level of 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy) within the given time period, they will be dismissed from the respective Program. However, if a student achieves a term GPA of 2.0 or more (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy) in any of the probation-trimesters/semesters (1st, 2nd or 3rd) without achieving CGPA of 2.0 (2.5 for Department of Pharmacy), s/he will be allowed to continue his/her probation as long as s/he maintains a term GPA of 2.0 or more (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy). During this extended period of probation, if his/her term GPA falls below 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy) at any point of time, s/he will normally be dismissed from the Program. However, if deemed necessary by the concerned department/program, such a student may be kept on continued probation until s/he achieves a term GPA/CGPA of 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy); the concerned department/program will, however, be required to place such exceptional cases to the Academic and Admin Committee, along with justification(s), for the Committee’s consideration. The Academic and Admin Committee may allow his/her continued probation, or decide to dismiss the student from the concerned department/program.

iv. Graduate students, who have completed less than 15 credits, will be served with maximum three probation notices in consecutive trimesters/semesters (once in a trimester/semester) to come out of the state of probation. In case of failure to raise the CGPA to the level of 2.0 within the stipulated time period, concerned students will be dismissed from the respective Program. However, if a student achieves a term GPA of 2.0 or more in any of the probation-trimesters/semesters (1st, 2nd or 3rd) without achieving CGPA of 2.0, s/he will be allowed to continue his/her probation as long as s/he maintains a term GPA of 2.0 or more. During this extended period of probation, if his/her term GPA falls below 2.0 at any point of time, s/he will be dismissed from the Program.

v. Graduate students, who have completed 15 credits or more, will also be served with three probation notices in consecutive trimesters/semesters (once in a trimester/semester) to come out of the state of probation. In case of failure to raise the CGPA to the level of 2.0 within the stipulated time period, concerned students will be dismissed from the respective Program. However, if a student achieve a term GPA of 2.0 or more in any of the probation-trimesters/semesters (1st, 2nd or 3rd) without achieving CGPA of 2.0, s/he will be allowed to continue his/her probation as long as s/he maintains a term GPA of 2.0 or more. During this extended period of probation, if his/her term GPA falls below 2.0 at any point of time, s/he will normally be dismissed from the Program. However, if deemed necessary by the concerned department/program, such a student may be kept on continued probation until s/he achieves a term GPA/CGPA of 2.0; the concerned department/program will, however, be required to place such exceptional cases to the Academic and Admin Committee, along with justification(s), for the Committee’s consideration. The Academic and Admin Committee may allow his/her continued probation, or decide to dismiss the student from the concerned department/program.

vi. Students on probation of undergraduate programs must register minimum 6 credits in a trimester/semester.

vii. If a student comes out of probation after one/two/three or more probation notices—as may be applicable, his/her subsequent probation(s), if any, will be counted anew i.e., his/her earlier probations will not be counted towards the new probation while issuing another set of maximum three or more probation notices on each occasion.

viii. Department change will not be allowed for a student in probation.

ix. A student, who was dismissed from a department/program, may be readmitted to UIU through regular admission test and will be treated as a new student. Course waiver in such cases will be allowed, if applicable, provided the student had achieved a minimum grade of ‘D’ or above in the same or equivalent courses previously.

 x. Parents/Legal Guardians of all students on probation will be notified of the probation status of their wards through sending a copy of the probation notice (along with transcript—marked “PROBATION”) to their registered address and/or to their email, phone, etc. Relevant Program Offices will call those parents/legal guardians to confirm receipt of the probation notices.

xi. All students on probation will have to attend all programs (special counseling, special classes, tutorial classes, mentoring, etc.) that the university may undertake from time to time on a mandatory basis. Students violating such instructions to attend improvement programs will not be served with more than three probation notices—as described above, and they will be dismissed from the department/program after the 3rd probation notice if s/he does not achieve the CGPA of 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy).

xii. Periodically, as and when deemed necessary, UIU may organize Parents/Legal Guardian-Teachers Meeting to brief them about the steps taken by UIU for bringing their children out of probation.

xiii. All students, irrespective of their probation status/history, must obtain a final CGPA of at least 2.0 (2.5 for the Department of Pharmacy) in order to receive the degree—both in undergraduate and graduate programs.

UIU Probation Policy 2025 will be effective from Spring 2025. This policy will be applicable for all existing students of UIU, irrespective of their admission trimester/semester, as well as for all the new students to be admitted onwards.
