In the context of the latest directives issued by the Government of Bangladesh and the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, the Academic & Administration Committee of the United International University (UIU) held a meeting today at the university.
The meeting discussed all the relevant issues that have arisen since the Quota Reform Movement began in last July, which eventually turned into a massive Anti-Discrimination Movement with participation of students from both public and private universities as well as people from all walks of life. The meeting expressed its gratefulness to the UIU students who joined the movement and valiantly fought for ensuring the rights of all. The meeting adopted a resolution thanking the UIU students for their indomitable courage and determination that they have displayed during the last few weeks and came home victorious.
Now that the situation appears to be slowly but firmly being stabilised, the meeting felt that the UIU also needs to take its students back to their academic life. UIU has lost one of its students, Md. Irfan Bhuiyan, in the movement. This is an irreparable loss not only to his family and friends but also to the university. A good number of our students got injured, and some are still recovering from their injuries. Some UIU students had also been detained, all of whom have since been released with combined efforts of their guardians and UIU. In a nutshell, all of our students have faced unprecedented trauma, both physical and psychological in the last six weeks.
Considering the difficult situation and with a view to safeguard the academic career of our students, the meeting today decided to take the following course of actions to resume its academic activities, which UIU hopes would help our students heal from the past few weeks’ traumatic experience and begin to carry on with their normal life:
